Grace Sakwa

President and Co-Founder

Co-founder and president of Shelter Academy of Light, Grace Sakwa had a heart for helping others less fortunate from an early age. Growing up in a large family in Bukhabusi, a small village in Eastern Uganda, Grace was brought up with charity and compassion for others as a way of life. Her parents, William Mayeku and Abias Nasaaka, frequently included other children who were being cared for “as their own” to provide a means for their survival and success. Grace and her siblings were often sent by their mother to “go help,” which involved checking on neighbors and infirm community members, helping with church events, and the like. This compassionate worldview had a profound impact on Grace. At age 16, Grace and her then 13-year-old sister, Esther, began out of their own home a nutritional support ministry for undernourished children in their village.  While studying at National Teachers’ College at Kaliro, where she earned her teaching degree specializing in English and literature, a mutual friend introduced Grace and George, and Grace discovered a partner who shared her deep desire to aid others–especially vulnerable kids. Between the two of them, they “adopted” eight children. When George immigrated to the United States in 1998 and Grace in 2000, they continued to support their adopted children  from afar. Grace and George have four beautiful children of their own. Grace is passionate about her work and enjoys serving others, especially in the healthcare field.  Additionally, Grace has continued working in volunteer ministries, most notably in church in the nursery and with childcare, and as a leader for AWANA clubs.  Grace’s heart continues to grow when it comes to helping children. Grace’s mission to help the poor, orphaned, and underprivileged is manifested in she and George founding Shelter Academy of Light.  She is familiar with the challenges and obstacles to obtaining an education in rural Uganda, and in gratitude for the life and opportunities she has been provided–Grace is inspired to make a difference and help provide an education for those who otherwise may not have the same chance.  Grace gives glory to God and is thankful for the broad network of support in developing this mission.
