Building on the success of the Small Steps Reading Clubs, approximately 6 acres have been purchased in Bubutu, in Eastern Uganda, for the building of Shelter Academy of Light. Plans for the construction of this private school–with boarding accommodations–are in process to offer a quality education to the neediest of children in the region. Local Ugandan professionals, teachers, social workers, church, and community leaders in Bubutu are developing curriculum with a goal of opening the school with an inaugural first-grade class.
Adding an additional grade each year, Shelter Academy of Light intends ultimately to have a fully enrolled primary school serving grades one through seven. A dedicated board of directors and a broad network of supporters in the United States are committed to assisting this vision through fundraising, partnering in oversight, and raising awareness of the plight of the children in Bubutu.
