Our revamped Menstrual Health Promotion Initiative, led by Shelter Academy of Light Program Manager Janet Mbabazi and Treasurer Beatrice Nabitiri, launched with great anticipation this past February. Originally focused on female students at Small Steps Reading Clubs partner schools, the program has expanded to welcome all interested community members. This inclusive approach allows families and loved ones to share vital knowledge, providing comprehensive support to girls throughout the community. By doing so, we are helping more girls manage their menstrual health effectively, ensuring their education continues without disruption.
On February 11, 2025, we officially initiated hands-on training sessions for girls and mothers in Bukhabusi, Maala, and Musiye. This initiative aims to provide essential menstrual health education and practical skills to create reusable sanitary pads.
During our discussions, it was reported that economic challenges often force families to prioritize other household essentials over sanitary products, making it difficult for girls to remain in school while on their periods. Additionally, community health workers have reported a concerning link between inadequate menstrual hygiene and adverse health effects among young girls throughout the community. Our program addresses these challenges by offering critical knowledge and practical solutions to empower both girls and their mothers.
Since the program’s launch, significant progress has been made in various areas. Training sessions began in February, starting with manual pad-making techniques and gradually advancing to the use of sewing machines. Participants in each village have committed to attending monthly training sessions. To ensure sustainability and community ownership, graduates of the initial training sessions will soon assist in teaching others, multiplying the program’s impact. Furthermore, plans are underway to establish pop-up markets where community members can sell reusable pads, providing a sustainable source of income and enhancing local economic resilience.
Looking Forward
