Co-founder, director
George Sakwa

George Sakwa, co-founder of Shelter Academy of Light, was born and raised in Bumbo, Eastern Uganda. After teaching at Magale Girls’ Boarding Primary School, he relocated to Kenya in 1988, where he studied Sign Language. George graduated from the Kenya Institute of Special Education in 1993 and subsequently taught sign language at Kyambogo University’s Department of Special Education in 1994. In 1998, he immigrated to the United States, where he was later joined by his wife, Grace. They are blessed with four children.
For the past 25 years, George has worked in the healthcare industry in the US. His passion for education and his desire to see future generations thrive led him and Grace to support and provide educational opportunities to eight foster children in Uganda. George believes that every child should have the chance to explore their God-given potential through education and a good quality of life. For George and Grace, founding Shelter Academy of Light was another way to expand their efforts in transforming the lives of vulnerable children, and of their communities.
